How to Measure Furniture for Delivery

Help make delivery day a breeze by measuring your space and comparing it to the furniture piece's dimensions before purchasing.

Already made your purchase? You can find your item's dimensions in the product description on our website, or contact the store where you made your purchase for assistance.

Have questions about a product's dimensions or need additional clarification? Reach out to your nearest Furniture Mart. Our team is happy to help verify measurements whenever possible, so you can feel confident your new piece is the right fit.

When measuring, account for the height, width, and depth of the piece you want to bring home. These measurements will give you the full scale of the piece.

  • For chairs and sofas, you will also need the diagonal depth.
  • Diagonal depth tells you whether a piece can be tilted at an angle to maneuver through a tight doorway. Delivery teams use this technique constantly, so knowing this number in advance tells you whether a tricky entryway can be used.
  • To measure diagonal depth, view the sofa or chair from the side.
  • Measure from the highest point of the back of the chair to the furthest point on the armrest.
  • Measure from the bottom back corner of the piece to where it intersects the straight edge. This measurement represents the furniture’s diagonal depth.
  • See the illustration for a more in-depth explanation.
  • Give yourself 1-2 extra inches when measuring your furniture to allow some wiggle room.
  • Identify where you want the new piece to live. For a visual on how it will fit in the space, map out the area with painter’s tape.

Measuring Your Home

Double Check the Space

Once you’ve determined the location for your new furniture piece, consider its surroundings.

  • Be sure to double-check for any outlets, vents, or light switches that may be obstructed by the piece.
  • Determine the best route from outside your home to where the piece will reside.
  • Note any obstacles along the way, including building access points.

Doorways

Measure the height, width, and diagonals of all the doorways along the path, including the door handles and door jambs when necessary.

  • Compare the frame measurements with the furniture measurements to determine whether the piece can go straight through or must be angled or turned on its end.
  • For sofas and chairs, the width of the entryway must exceed one of the following: the piece’s depth, diagonal depth, or height.

Hallways

Measure the ceiling height and width of every hallway your item will pass through.

  • Keep wall/ceiling fixtures and decorative moldings in mind when taking these measurements.
  • For narrow entryways and corners, measure the total clearance length: the distance from the wall, through the doorway to the opposite wall.
  • This is especially important for sofas and taller bookshelves that need to be moved horizontally.

Stairways

If your piece must travel up or down a staircase, measure each section carefully.

  • Measure the width of your stairway, including any handrails or banisters that cannot be removed.
  • Measure the height from the top and bottom steps to the ceiling.
  • Measure the diagonal from the steps and landing in case the item needs to be tilted to clear the stairway.
  • If there is a landing, measure its width and depth as well as the ceiling height from that spot.

Elevators

If your building has an elevator, you will need to measure every angle of the elevator.

  • Measure the door of your elevator, including the height, width, and diagonals.
  • Measure the elevator interior, including the height, width, depth, and diagonals.

Preparing for Delivery

Clear a path inside and outside for your new furniture by moving any existing furniture, objects, or plants out of the way. In the winter months, please make sure there is no snow or ice obstructing the path needed to deliver your furniture.

  • Make sure pets and children are safely out of the way.
  • Protect floors and anything else that could be damaged during delivery.
  • Depending on the location of your new furniture, you may also want to remove any wall décor or light fixtures to avoid scratches or collisions.
